The Red Scare

The United States' War on Communism at Home

The Red Scare was a time in United States history in which the fear of communism propelled a very high level of hatred for immigrants from Russia, and anyone who had any of the same views as represented in communism. Free speech was thrown out the window and people where arrested just for stating there opinion on the topic, such as the Connecticut clothing salesman who was sentenced to 6 months in jail, just for believing that Lenin was a smart man.

The Palmer Raids are one of the most well known examples of ignorance during this time. A. Mitchell Palmer was well known as extremely against communism. After having a large political following against communism for Palmer, a series of bombing occurred and it was suspected that they where done by Anarchists. These bombing went through 8 cities, including Washington D.C. where Palmer's home was partially destroyed in the bombings. After this, Palmer began aggressively raiding all those of whom he suspected of communism, and did so without any kind of warrant or provocation. Many people where also deported during this time.
